A Few Questions.

Wow, that whole scene with Rousseau's peeps getting eaten/taken by the smoke monster (typing "smoke monster" makes me feel a little silly) was nuts! I wonder what the explanation is for the effects the monster has on people: the guy with the arm ripped off calling out "innocently" for help to lure the other men down the hole and then Alex's father claiming his innocence to Rousseau when he really has malevolent intentions. Are there any other examples of the smoke monster using people like this instead of just killing them outright?

I do think it's interesting to learn how Rousseau became alone on the island and why she tends to be suspicious of most everyone.

Also, anyone have guesses as to why Enlightenment philosopher names are used in this show?*
-Desmond David Hume
-John Locke
-Danielle Rousseau-- could just be a coincidence, if it's a really common French last name?
Juliet Burke-- maybe also just a coincidence?

Other names of interest:
-Charlotte Staples Lewis-- same middle name, last name, and initials as C.S. Lewis
-Faraday was a 19th century physicist and chemist who worked with electromagnetic fields and radiation

  1. And MICHAEL Faraday was a famous physicist and chemist.

  2. AH - that's interesting about Charlotte. I made that connection about Faraday the other week when reading a book about 19th century England. Interesting.

And I agree, the whole "innocent" calling out of the smoke monster's lair was rather bizarre. I don't know if that has happened before. The only slightly similar thing I can think of is when the monster assumed the appearance of Yemi, Eko's brother. Craziness.

  3. Another thought - is the smoke monster's creation linked to the ancient temple where its lair was located? Could it be the product of an ancient ritual of protection or something like it? Obviously it's been around for a while since it predates Rousseau's arrival and the Dharma initiative.

J said he heard on a LOST podcast that the hieroglyphics on the temple have something to do with resurrection. I doubt that is linked to the smoke monster too, but it's an interesting theme to go along with the idea of life and death on the island.

  4. Almost every character name has a second meaning. even the "driver" from yesterday's episode. Abbadon is a figure from early Christian lore and is commonly known as "the destroyer".

I think one of the most glaringly obvious names is "Christian Shepherd"
