Dead or Alive?

Who thinks little Ben is really dead? And if he is really dead, what happens to old Ben? And if he's not really dead, does that explain why Ben is always so convinced that Sayid is a killer?

If Ben IS dead, I think it will not affect old Ben's past interactions with the islanders, but that he'll die or disappear or something. But I don't think he's really dead. He's too much of a villain to be off the show that easily.

What think ye?

  1. This is what I think: Ben is not dead. (You're right, ixoj, he's too much of a killer to get of the show so suddenly.) I think that Ben will recover, but I wonder if perhaps the gunshot wound could tie into the spinal problems that Ben had in earlier seasons. e, do you know if spinal tumors can be related to something like a gunshot wound? Or are the two things unrelated?

Anyhow, I think this whole incident with Sayid will begin Ben's interest in the Oceanic 6. Mems how Ben created a huge file on the oceanic survivors? And I agree with you, ixoj, I think that this is why Ben keeps insisting to Sayid that he is a "killer," because he remembers Sayid saying that when he was a child.

  2. I don't think he'll die. I believe he mentioned in an earlier season that the island had always healed him up until the point that he got the spinal tumor. That made him worry that the island didn't need/want him anymore and then Jack crashed on the island and he threw that idea out the window. Even when Christian (or Jacob?) told him Locke had to move the island, Ben wanted to do it because he couldn't accept that maybe the island was really finished with him. Thoughts?

No, I don't believe a gunshot wound to the heart is a risk factor for developing spinal tumors.

What really messes me up is the whole space-time continuum. I mean, did Ben think Sayid was a killer because he tried to kill Ben when he was a kid? Or did that event actually not happen until the island started skipping through time, thus creating a new past that wasn't there before? So, it's kind of like the chicken and the egg question to me-- who said it first, Ben in real time or Sayid in the past? Maybe there's some weird eternal time loop where both incidents happen, regardless? Perhaps I'm not even making sense. But then we do know that at least Farraday had been in the past before-- but do we know this for any of the Oceanic survivors? And I wonder if they are really changing the past how that will affect the future. Will it be significant or will things just go as before-- Desmond will crash, the plane will crash, the survivors go through the same things, etc.

Also, if the island isn't done with Desmond, I wonder how he'll end up back there. Maybe Sun's long journey is to get him to come back? Who knows. Also, I wonder what his purpose will be.

How was that for brain vomit.

  3. E- Interesting point about Ben and being healed. I think I lean towards Ben thinking Sayid is a killer because Sayid himself told him so in the past.

And I almost forgot about Desmond. We haven't seen him in so long! I almost hope he doesn't go back to the island because Penny will be so upset with him. But that's what makes a good story, I suppose.

  4. Clarification: In my first comment, I was wondering if perhaps Sayid's bullet missed Ben's heart and somehow damaged his spinal cord. Obviously, a gunshot to the heart would not be related to spinal tumors. (Even I know that!)

Yeah, I don't want Desmond to go back to the island either, not unless he brings Penny and little Charlie with him.

And I also agree with e about the Ben's being healed by the island. Good point.

  5. I really hoped Ben would really just disappear from the future/present. That'd be totally awesome. But there's no way. The whole "the universe tends to course-correct" has been too blatantly spelled out to allow something so major to happen. I think the writer's approach to time travel is that things kinda change, but not really. It'll be interesting to see how that all plays out, because it does make total sense that Ben discovers as a kid that these random people came from the future, which is why he did his research on them, and knew so much about them when they crashed.
